Servant leadership! On my way to emotional intelligence

Servant leadership! On my way to emotional intelligence

Emotional Intelligence: Understanding our feelings or emotions. Stress is common to all of us as humans that live in this present age. Volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) come to true in describing our real times. As for Leaders they have to brainstorm to handle these VUCA times and manage their emotions in the cause of their daily jobs. And so many irritations arise. The more challenges you face as a leader,   the more emotional upheaval you experience, and the resultant effect being that it becomes harder to think straight. Leaders have been discovered to be high in the statistics of victims of High Blood Pressure. Have you been there sir? And what a tragic point when as leaders, direction- drivers, we are not able to think straight anymore. This article is a Call to leaders that we can lead with calm and peace of mind. And these come as results of the best practices in servant leadership. Do we continue?

The Silent Killer.

Under induced stress, we get impotent, fearful, worried, and lose courage. This is when we then react without thinking. Following feelings, we come to be people who are inert even when we should be taking actions or even take wrong actions rather. These errors in timeliness or type of actions have caused us great loss in terms of businesses and many other ways. This has further compounded when in our leadership positions we struggle with built-up emotions by hurting ourselves. Many of us have gone to taking weed, drugs, alcohol, smoke, take ill, e.t.c., when overwhelmed in this way we struggle and entangle ourselves the more as such. The losses of a leader and organization in this way is not just a loss to the leader, but a loss to all, the society, and the family suffers. Leaders are the function of societal development.

The Way out.

Please note that you are too important to destroy yourself. Your being and well-being are as important as the people and society you are serving. . Don’t get into trouble with your emotions before crying out.

  1. Off-Load. In the build-up, offload. Again, I say offload. Get a listener and share. Share, even if you are at fault. Share your faults, share your over ambitions, share your financial pressures, share your confusions and fears. Share your anxieties, share your pains, and share your error of judgment. Share difficulty. Admit that you are human and need help. Only God doesn’t need help. Find someone you can talk to about what is going on. Talking out is a medicine, it helps, as well as crying and laughing out. With a good listener, you will find renewal.
  2. Share Power. Share benefits. Share responsibilities. Share profits. Share ownership. Sharing is giving and it gives back life. Those who eat alone die alone. An honest cry or hearty laugh with a friend at work refreshes your brain. It takes a fool to abuse you if you share your emotions with him or her. Get secure with your self-identity and not be afraid of sharing. Get more in our coaching: Leader knows yourself. https://courses.ddfoundations.org

Your personal security is not lost or in danger, if you share. Servant leadership in action.

  1. Find a safe place: If you have been observing yourself enough, you might have released there are places, scenes, environments that seem to refresh you. This is where I call my safe place for leaders. For me it is nature. A beautiful scene of nature. A hill, a valley, or a forest e t.c. This is why I am into environmental conservation as well. Nature is my friend. Find yours, and go there to refresh or offload.

Conclusion.

My point here is that Leaders can overcome the stress and emotional furor associated with their work, and lead with peace of mind. Leaders can enjoy leading. Leading can be both work and fun. These results are only but, that of the best practices of servant leadership. Servant leaders lead with peace of mind. And this can be your story of leadership. Is selfishness rising in the Leadership circles? Servant Leadership.

Selfishness is Obsession after own desires: Consumed with your own interests, needs, and wishes while ignoring those of others. Some of its synonyms are greed and egocentric.
It has killed businesses. Both small and big businesses have been victims. But you can be spared or change it to a lesson. We are concerned that a leader can be a victim of this and not be aware. This article is to be awake you for a check yourself and then you can salvage yourself and your organization. Take our coaching, ‘Leader know yourself’ www.courses.ddfoundations.org

Where we are

Businesses that deliver in peak performance despite extreme challenges do so by recognizing and surviving certain specific dangers: selfishness.
At the peak of it, selfishness kills people instead of needing teamwork to deal with injuries, technical needs, lean resources, and threats of the harsh business climate.
In certain more teams, selfishness kills impact, profits, and opportunities. Such a persistent danger creeps organizations very often than imagined.
Innocent-looking workplace politics can bring down the largest of businesses. Many a time the blames is shifted to lack of strategic planning, poor implementation, or lack of creativity. In digging deeper, however, among the cases in several organizations, we find out that selfishness alone ran the denial, evasion, blindness, or cover-ups till their death point.
The truth is that selfishness eats profits, the future, and the sustainability of organizations. Our course, ‘The motivation for Leadership’ can be helpful. www.courses.ddfoundations.org
How much is lost to selfishness?

Selfishness drives absence of power-sharing, benefit-sharing, risk sharing, teams inclusivity, profits sharing, e t c, and the general outcome falls to unfulfilled teams, attrition, and dying organization
Don Schmincke in his 2008 article analyzed that;
‘The resulting damage of selfishness with more than 10,000 executives from 1997 to 2007 produced an alarming statistic: selfish behavior sucks 20 to 80 percent of productive time out of organizations, with the overall average hovering around 50 percent.
Companies hardly measure this damage even though this damage goes further to immeasurable costs – growth index, business quality erosion, wastefulness, turnover, and low morale.

How can leaders overcome selfishness?
Servant Leadership is the Solution.
He un-sits himself in his mind and puts others there in place of his ego. The servant-leader is servant first, it begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, and serve first. A good objective of servant leadership is to help the poor-doers to do well, and the good-doers to do even better. Servant leaders lead with others in mind. This means He shares power, creativity, values, benefits, profits, influence, success, risk, communication. At this point, he is no more selfish.
Conclusion
Business must be seen and taken as a calling to service. Businesses are humanistic institutions and not just money-spinning institutions.
We call for this paradigm shift through regular exposure to the skillset of servant leadership. With this, we can have a better organization and a better society. Servant leadership will help us achieve better workplaces and a better world. ‘Performance can go through the roof’ in the words of Art Barter. Sometimes, You are the Problem: Servant Leadership

Servant Leadership saved me. Servant leadership means a lot to me. It is leadership in the first principles. I personally follow it. It saved “The army of God Gospel Outreach’’. It saved Daruwana Development Foundation.
The story of my life is rooted in the principles of servant leadership. It has changed me, it changed the way I lead my organizations, all of my relationships. I’ve had to rethink what being and acting as a servant leader looks like in a digital space. I leaned it the hard way.
Leaders Must Change First.
First, let’s bring forth the definition of servant leadership that I use the most.
Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enrich the lives of individuals, build better organizations, and ultimately create a more just and caring world. – Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership
Though my foundations have not been that of control and oppression of others, I certainly did so many things wrong. This philosophy is based on the belief that by serving others, not only will you strengthen businesses, but you can change the world. I believed in this but didn’t know how to have gone about it.
In my few years of this practice, I’ve come to recognize that this is not a popular style of leadership. I know this because when I began my own leadership transformation in 2014 I did it out of necessity. I embraced it more as a challenge for myself because I was in anxiety and frustrated due to my leadership responsibilities. After all, I had nothing to lose at that point—but everything to gain.
Yes, the resulting change was a mind shift imbibing and living this philosophy and this absolutely does inform the way I lead today. This leadership style has opened my eyes and forced me to look at my people—as leaders should.
My journey.
Admittedly, I was leading in my own way. I was planting churches, community development centers, and cooperative societies for rural people in North Central Nigeria. Then I suddenly noticed I was under pressure. The Churches and Community development centers were not self-supporting, self-propagating, and self-governing. So the pressure was too heavy on me. It was telling in my health and in my family. And worse more was, I didn’t know where the problem lay. Through my mind, several thoughts ran through. Was I working with the wrong people? We sometimes conclude this way. Was I working in closed communities? Was it the high level of illiteracy? Was it the geographical location? Was it the high level of poverty among the indigenous people? So many questions. I didn’t know where to begin, but I knew something had to change in order to preserve both me and the organization.
Then I undertook research from books and stumbled into the information that my leadership style was the error. Leadership style? Yes, it was. As I went further to study, I landed on the understanding that people, people, and people are the shoulders of self–sustaining communities, churches, organizations, or businesses enterprises.
I was not running people-inclusive organizations. I was more goal-oriented and not through the people. I almost killed myself. I was the sole leader. This understanding, as I would discover is the central theme of servant leadership.
Having discovered this, the next challenge was to let go of control and power. Should I share power and yet have it? Or should hold on to power and yet lose it? It was a dilemma. Take our course; “The Soul of leadership” https://courses.ddfoundations.org.
At this point, I became face to face with the ego as an enemy. But I studied more and more. Knowledge –Education is an instrument to changing any life. I didn’t change and let go. I decided to start acting selflessly. Now I lead with peace of mind. Though we had grown up traditionally that “greed or ego is good’ and up till now lead with such mindset, now we know better. In this digital age, we must lead differently. People-inclusion is a gateway to any entrepreneurial endeavor

Servant-Leaders: They are few

Servant-Leaders: They are not many
In our conceptualization of servant leadership and its movement, we come face to face with this compound word; Servant-Leader. We are not inventing a new kind of leader here. Here the word servant is not an adjective to the word leader. It is a noun. The servant Leader is both a servant and a leader at the same time. We call it a new thought pattern in leadership. When we use the word, Servant without the leader, Greenleaf said, ‘it is focused on providing for others, doing good deeds, and making things easier for those they serve’. A servant is a passionate person; heart and soul. He serves with a mind to relieve pain and bring solace. We have so few of such people in our society who live compelled as volunteers to serve the need of others. What we have celebrated as leaders are those we now realize as those who have served themselves to the full. Greenleaf said, ‘we are blessed if know any of them, and to follow such an example of service’. They can become our role models in the life of service if we find them. Role modeling is a strong force in making the next generations.

On the other hand, the leader without the servant, is goal-oriented, strategic planning and accomplishing the mission, growing the sphere of influence, and succeeding by KPI measures. This is the driving and directing force. His brain and body are very strong with charisma. He is action-oriented as we know. They influence energy and keep to pace. Their clarity of vision and unrelenting pursuit of goals is enthusiastic and charming to us all.
For further details check www.courses.ddfoundations.org/
The Servant –Leader, and not Servant and Leader humbly accept that their own goals are, helping those they serve or team members achieving the goals as being their highest aspirations in life; connecting them to a life of purpose. Following a servant leader takes you to the point of self-actualization. And the basic needs of their teams are not being neglected as well. They enjoy lifting the capacity of others, with no expectation of what they will get in return. Here lies the richest way to live and find meaning.
We find this servant and leader concept and practices as a new light to us. It’s day dawn. It is burning like a wildfire in our souls. We are very clear that this is the solution to the leadership crises we have indulged ourselves in this contemporary times. Daruwana Servant Leadership institute is poised to raise a new tribe of leaders (Servant-Leaders) closing up the scarcity, for this Century, who will first of all encounter change in themselves and then go forth to change the society.
